A string, as stated on the Zentangle Website, at its most basic, is a random line drawn in pencil that creates an area in which you draw your tangles. The very first string you learn in a basics class is the Zentangle Z.
I struggle with creating strings. I always seem to do the same big loopy curve and wiggly lines. Sometimes, to switch it up, I will ask my husband, Andrew, to draw the string for me. His style seems to be loopy too but on a smaller scale.
Last week, a tangling friend posted her creation from the "It`s a String Thing” weekly challenge. Being a teacher on summer vacation, I am really enjoying participating in tangling challenges. Such challenges include "I Am The Diva" weekly challenge (see post here) and the Mindful Creativity with Tangles daily challenge (post coming soon).
It`s a String Thing is a weekly challenge create by Adele Bruno (CZT in Florida) of Tickled to Tangle in 2013. Every Tuesday, Adele posts a string and pattern challenge on her blog. The strings and patterns suggested are from Linda Farmers website Tangle Patterns. The way it works is who ever created the string being used, we then use patterns and tangles that begin with the letter in their name or some variation of that. For example, Linda Farmers created the first string in the challenge so we used tangles and patterns that began with the letter L.
#Since I am on summer holidays, and I feel like I need to really practice my tangling skills, I decided to go all the way back to Tuesday, August 13, 2013 and complete the very first It`s a String Thing Challenge #1 . So far, I have completed the first twelve challenges.
To date there have been 154 It's a String Thing weekly challenges. Instead of using 154 tiles to complete each challenge, I have decided to draw tile templates in a sketchbook I bought during the Opus inventory sale. I am also using a Papermate Flair Felt-Tip Medium Point Black Pen.
I am definitely finding some of the patterns and tangles challenging, but I am glad to have the opportunity to practice them. I think this challenge will be very helpful for me to practice my skills, be okay with imperfections, and feel inspired.
